Overview

The University of Newcastle College of International Education (CIE) offers a range of programmes designed to prepare international students for entry into over 130 undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of Newcastle. By successfully completing foundation studies, foundation studies in medicine, an express preparation programme, a degree transfer programme, or a pre-master’s course at CIE, students can expect a smooth transition into a university degree.

The foundation programmes at CIE allow students to boost their qualifications and bridge any gaps in academic and English language skills required for university entry. Successful applicants have the opportunity to receive a packaged offer with acceptance to both the foundation programme and the bachelor’s degree at the University of Newcastle.

CIE is the only international pathway provider in Australia to offer a Foundation Studies in Medicine (FSM) programme. It’s designed to help students develop a strong foundation in science, with intensive classes in biology, chemistry, human biology, and introductory mathematics that allow students to develop a well-rounded knowledge base. FSM students are also exempt from taking the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) – the admissions test for medical, dental, and clinical science degrees.

CIE also offers a range of degree transfer programmes, designed for students who have completed 12 years of schooling in their home country, and offers a direct pathway into the second year of their chosen bachelor’s degree at the University of Newcastle. These programmes cover six different streams: business, commerce, design (architecture), construction management, engineering, and information technology.

The college’s pre-master’s course offers international students the opportunity to jump straight into the second trimester of a master’s degree at the University of Newcastle. Taught over two trimesters, the programme initially develops study and research skills while supporting the improvement of English academic language in writing, reading, listening, and speaking. Afterwards, students can begin studying their chosen university subjects, fast-tracking their master’s qualification.

When studying at CIE, students can benefit from small class sizes, personalised support, and access to the outstanding facilities and services offered by the University of Newcastle. This encompasses seven cutting-edge libraries with a vast collection of 1.3 million resources, a diverse array of over 150 clubs and societies, complimentary career guidance services, and a Centre for Teaching and Learning providing convenient drop-in sessions and academic workshops to enhance learning experiences.

Accommodation

Newcastle is one of the most affordable cities in Australia for student accommodation, and the CIE aims to help students find the perfect place to live during their studies by guiding them through their options.

An award-winning on-campus accommodation – Student Living – is available for students wishing to experience a multicultural and conveniently-located living environment. Student Living offers students a range of residences to suit their budgets and lifestyles, including private or shared rooms/facilities.

CIE can also help students organise off-campus living options to suit their specific needs as the college works closely with a real estate agent focused on student accommodation in Newcastle. Through this collaboration, students can access safe and student-friendly properties that are equipped with furniture.

Students can also choose to live with a local family to improve their English skills and become more familiar with Australian culture. To ensure both safety and comfort, CIE helps students arrange homestays through the Australian Homestay Network—a network of carefully-screened host families.
